Four Pillars of Destiny

The part worth knowing is not what kind of person you are. It is which ten-year stretch you are standing in.

Four pillars, and then the thing on top of them

The four pillars are the year, month, day and hour of a birth, each written as a pair of symbols. The day's first symbol is the reference point everything else is read against — it stands for the person.

On its own that produces a character sketch, which is unfalsifiable and therefore not very interesting. What makes this system different from a natal chart is the layer above it: the luck cycles, which cut a life into ten-year periods and give each one a distinct character. That produces claims with dates attached, and a claim with a date on it can be checked against what actually happened.

Why ten years

Each cycle advances one step along the same sequence the months follow, so the period changes wholesale rather than drifting. The consequence people notice is that a difficult stretch is bounded: it started in a particular year and it ends in a particular year, and the period after it has a different character by construction.
