What a day master is

A BaZi chart is eight characters — four pairs, one each for the year, month, day and hour of birth. The stem of the day pair is the day master. Every other character in the chart is classified by how it stands to that one: what feeds it, what drains it, what competes with it, what it produces. Two people with the same seven other characters and a different day master have different charts entirely.

The element matters more than the label

Day masters come in ten forms — five elements, each in a stronger and a softer state. The element sets what you run on and what you run out of; the state sets how you carry it. A wood day master born in autumn and one born in spring share a label and live in different weather. That is why this calculator reads the whole chart around the day master rather than stopping at the label.

What the day master does not tell you

On its own — almost everything people actually come asking. Whether the last few years were supposed to feel this heavy, when the current stretch ends, what replaces it: those answers live in the ten-year cycles that run over the chart, not in the day master itself.
